Okay, first things first...everyone's alive. There's extensive property damage, but houses are still habitable and nothing living died. Also, given my dog's intense dislike of thunderstorms, it's probably good that she's dead because a tree fell on the car that she usually hid under and it she would have likely died of fright.
I hesitate to be melodramatic, but you know...damn. I'm starting to feel a little like Job here. I'm so very, very happy that I'm getting out of town tomorrow. Prior to last night it's because I didn't want to spend the weekend either (a) moping around my apartment or (b) up at my parents' house throwing myself on my dog's grave. But now that apparently there are no trees around the house...I just don't know what that's going to be like. There was a combo of 100+ year old maples and a ton of ornamentals that I've planted through the years. All gone.
There was one good thing to come out of this week...Barack Obama finally cinched the Democratic nomination. Read this summary from the Daily Kos that compares how he and Hillary have performed as Senators. I was excited about him before, but now I'm totally waving the Obama flag.
Okay. Leaving tomorrow hellishly early. Back Monday afternoon.
I was really happy about the California Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage...until I remembered that this was a presidential election year and the far right now has their "get out the vote" issue. Damn.
I've been ignoring the presidential campaign as much as possible recently because I just get too worked up about it. However, I just have to share this latest Salon article about the Clintons and how some of her recent comments harken back to the old days of the Democratic party, and by that I mean George Wallace era Democratic Party. Check it, yo.
I mean, destroy your reputation if you want to, Clintons, with your veiled references to Jesse Jackson and refusing to clarify whether or not Obama is a Muslim (although, if he were, WHO CARES) and keep giving McCain all the ammunition he needs to defeat Obama (WHO IS GOING TO BE THE NOMINEE SO JUST ACCEPT IT ALREADY), but damn...don't go dragging the party down with you.
In other news, the happy pills have kicked in. I am now comfortably numb instead of depressed. Hopefully cheery is not too far behind.
I've been listening to the politics coverage on and off this evening. Once again someone brought up the idea of an Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket. As precedent, they offered two examples of former rivals teaming up successfully: Reagan/Bush and Kennedy/Johnson.
Know what else they have in common? Conspiracy theorists believe that both Johnson and Bush (or their associates) were behind the assassination attempts on their presidents.
I've been following the presidential election pretty closely, but I might have missed something. Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has ever asked Hillary Clinton if she thinks that Laura Bush is qualified to run for President in 2012 or 2016. Because I'd really like to hear how she answered that one.
Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Obama and Clinton are fighting it out for the Democrat nomination. And people are floating the idea that they pair up in some sort of dream team ticket, but no one is really agreeing on who gets the top spot.
Okay, so here's the truly terrible thought that came into my head today, but would make everyone happy (well, sort of) in the end...
The Clinton camp should throw their support behind Obama and let him take the top spot with the condition that she gets the VP slot. Why? Because chances this would increase the chances of the dems winning the White House. And when - I could say "if" but it seems to be a dead certainty by most people - President Obama gets assassinated, Clinton would get to take over and have her turn.
Get used to saying it.
There's an old joke about being a Cubs fan that goes something like, "The nice thing about being a Cubs fan is that after May you can quit worrying about the pennant race and just sit back and enjoy the rest of the season."
On a similar note, the nice thing about being an independent/liberal is that you don't have to worry about IF the Dems would screw up, it's only a matter of WHEN. And after last night, that's been answered, so now we can all just sit back and wait for the November election of John McCain.
Oh, I have no doubt now he's going to win. Unless he has a full-fledged 'Nam flashback in the middle of his acceptance speech at the Republican convention, and even then it's probably even odds. I mean, as of right now, the polls are already tied. For the next few months, all John McCain has to do is keep his head down and start raising money. The eventual Democratic nominee, on the other hand, will be throwing money at what is likely to be an increasingly negative campaign while their opponent does the same. You know, in other words, doing the work that John McCain normally would have been doing. The DNC convention will eventually roll around and a bloodied and broke candidate will be nominated to the disgust of half of the party. Great.
Here's one piece of spin that's been bothering me: the Clinton campaign has been trumpeting their win in Ohio as something that somehow shows that they'll be able to take this key battleground state in November. But winning against Barack Obama is not the same as winning against John McCain. McCain is going to get all the independents who voted for Obama, plus the republicans in the state, plus the fact that it's highly feasible that the African-American vote (a traditional Dem block) will stay home out of disgust. I'm not bringing this up because I hate Hillary Clinton - although I totally do - but because I'm honestly confused at why this point is being brought up and no one in the media seems to have the confusion about it that I do.
Seven weeks until the Pennsylvania primary. This is going to be rough.
After a month of dreary predictions, my horoscopes are finally starting to pick up and be fun. Here's todays "quickie."
Um, what? I, uh, already do that....Quickie: Adding more romance to your life is easier than you think. No partner is necessary.
Then I looked at the "extended."
OH, okay. I just need to cheer up. Can do.Adding a touch of romance to your life might not seem appropriate right now, but it might be exactly what you need. You need to smile more often! Remember: You don't have to have a love partner to get more romantic. You just have to start seeing things in a more idealistic, beautiful, and hopeful way. The rest will take care of itself. All you need to do is start to focus on the positive possibilities, and the universe will take the hint. Try it and see!
I can't wait to see the election results tonight. All the dems in my family are voting for Obama, which they were going to do even before I started harassing them about it. So I think that bodes well for him, although the polls are shaky. I'm just hoping this doesn't turn into another New Hampshire and I'll be forced to listen to the Clinton campaign gloat for 4 more weeks.
Unfortunately, I was going to watch the series finale of The Wire first, but they're not putting it up on OnDemand until next week. Bastards.
Man the Clinton campaign annoys me. I wish MSNBC would have taken up their offer to not do the debate, especially since it's the Clinton camp that wants as many as possible.
Seriously. Look up "martyrdom complex" in the dictionary and there's a Clinton pictured.
