So, I just downloaded Dexy's Midnight Runners, Puff Daddy and Neal Diamond from the Zune marketplace. I'm not sure what this says about me.
I think I may have to get a Zune car adapter before the big roadtrip on Friday.
Do you think Amy Winehouse should have been granted a U.S. visa so that she could perform at this year's Grammys?
I guess this question was written before she got her visa. Doesn't matter though, because she still is going to perform via satellite.
Here's the thing...I love Amy Winehouse's music. Love it! (She's currently the #1 played artist on my zune list.) But let's be honest here - she ain't going to be alive much longer. So I'm sorta happy that there will be a performance that I can see after she's dead. Hopefully she'll have it pulled together enough so that it's a decent one, suitable for "let's honor the dead" montages.
The Ed Lover Dance Song, FTW. Music to pack by.
I can't stop singing this song lately.
Which friend or acquaintance most influenced your taste in music?
Submitted by Rev Stan.
I don't know that any one person has influenced my taste in music above all others. Basically, I absorb whatever my friends listen to. I love music, but I'm really bad at seeking it out. If it were not for the invention of the mixtape (or now mix CD), I would probably listen to nothing but classical music and The Beatles.
Now that people are back from leave, I'm actually able to spend my mornings in my office, ostensibly working, but...well, you know how it goes. Some days you work, some days you mess with your Facebook profile 1000 times. Which, fortunately for me, is close enough to "work" for me that I don't really feel guilty.
I'm also able to listen to music again while I "work". I used to listen to Pandora or my former local classical station. When I was up at that wedding last weekend, I had the joy of discovering that one of my favorite radio stations is now streaming on the Internet. Yay! It's hard to describe their format, but suffice it to say they play the music that would be the soundtrack to a John Cusack movie.
So, if your in front of a computer between the hours of 9am to 1pm, eastern daylight time and want to know what I'm listening to, log in and check it out. One caveat...if you want to see the playlist as it streams, you have to use IE. I know, boo, right?
How is it Sunday evening again already? Let's do another catch all post, shall we?

I went to a wedding yesterday. It was a real down-home affair, held outdoors with the reception taking place at a local bar. On the drive there I made a conscious decision to have a good time. And I did.
On the drive home, I decided that I'm no longer going to hate on weddings. Sure, most of them are terrible wastes of money and deep down I suspect that most of the weddings I've attended had more thought put into them than the marriages that they were supposed to start, but I don't care anymore. If two people have managed to find someone to love, even if it's just for the few months around the wedding, well then, good for them. Just because I'm going to die alone and my body will only be discovered because the smell of my rotting corpse (half eaten by my herd of cats) has attracted the attention of my otherwise distant neighbors, there's no reason that I should rain on anyone else's parade.
I have another wedding to go to at the end of the month. That's going to be a family event and most decidedly not a down-home affair. We shall see if my new found wedding-positive attitude will last.

During my wandering through the Internet this week, I found this map of the New American Nations. I don't agree with any of the map-maker's ideas (Tennesee? In the same country as Cleveland? I don't think so. I do agree that Texas would probably go back to being it's own nation though.), but it's kinda an interesting intellectual exercise thinking about what nations would form if/when the United States were to split up again. I do think it's bound to happen eventually. Although, I never thought the European Union would ever get as far as it has, so what do I know?
He/she also spelled Cincinnati wrong - three i's, three n's, one t. It's really not that hard to spell and I don't know why everyone has such trouble with it.

Why did I ever think Wonder Woman was an awesome show? It was really and truly terrible.

I finally got around to listening to both Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen this weekend. Thus far, they were just some British chicks that were always featured on ONTD who seemed to be famous for slowly killing themselves with drugs and mouthing off, respectively. Also, Lily Allen is the Sheriff of Notingham's daughter. Anyway, I really dig them both. They do not sound at all like I was expecting them to. I think I'm going to become MySpace friends with them.

I'm reading a book right now that's set in my town. It's a little disconcerting. I keep getting pulled out of the story by thoughts like "Hey! I just drove by that Kroger's yesterday!"

I leave for my big conference in five days. I'm not really prepared at all - mentally, emotionally or practically. I do, however, have a schedule set so I know which meetings I absolutely have to be at, which meetings would be interesting, and which timeslots I have available for doing whatever I feel like doing at that moment. After a few months of giddiness, I think I've finally started to remember that this is a work gig, after all, and I gots the Sword of Damocles (aka tenure obligations and contract renewal) hanging over my head. So I suppose I'm going to have to suck it up, smile and press the flesh. Too bad I'm feeling so anti-social right now.
I also really need to make those little last minute purchases like new underwear and stuff. Not that I have any hope of showing anyone my underwear at this point, but just in case my plane crashes, I would like the coroner's office to know that I was raised right. However, I just did not feel like it this weekend. I'll have to do it after work one night this week. I'm also trying to decide if I should get a pedicure or not. Seems sort of pointless now. I've also ran though every possible awkward encounter I could have with former co-workers and others, gamed out my responses, and finally think I'm ready for that at least.
Silent Bob has gone MIA this past week. I've thought of 100s of reasons why that could be the case (some good, some bad), but honestly? I've danced this dance enough times with Tiger that I'm not sweating it. I'll either hear from him again or I won't. He's either dead or he's alive or maybe even he's alive but went crazy and ran off into the sunset never to be heard from again. He's either read this blog and is completely freaked out or he just got busy at work. (But seriously, dude, if you are reading this you really should tell me so I can start reading your blog. It's only fair.) I do not know and I'm not going to make myself crazy trying to figure it out. It's sort of damned inconvenient timing, though.

I learned a new tech trick this week. I went down a bad back alley of the Internet and my computer got jumped by a bunch of malware. It took me forever to get it all off (and I'm not entirely sure I have gotten it all off.) Most annoyingly, all of these IE windows would keep popping up. I tried to uninstall IE (as I am a sworn Firefox user I don't really need it) but I couldn't quite make that work. But anyway, what I learned was, to really wipe you computer clean, reboot your computer, but right when Windows is starting up, hit F8 and then choose to run in "safe mode." Then run your anti-spyware stuff. It gets the stuff that otherwise re-installs itself.

Okay, I'm going to watch Family Guy and then go to bed. Another work week begins...
